Clear the Air: Understanding Radon and Protecting Your Home
This graphic pictures where radon enters into the home.
What is Radon?
Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs when uranium in rocks breaks down in the soil. It also can be found in water. Radon escapes from the ground into the air, where it continues to produce radioactive particles. It is completely invisible to humans and is unable to be detected with any of our senses. It enters into homes through through cracks and gaps in the foundation, walls, and floors. As the levels build, everyone in the home is being put at risk. Some of the main spots where radon can get into the home are through the crawlspace and the basement.
Why Should I Care?
Long-term exposure to high radon levels is linked to a variety of health risks. It is the biggest cause of lung cancer after smoking. Another important fact is that you won't feel the effects of radon poisoning right away. It is estimated that radon causes over 21,000 lung cancer-related deaths in the United States each year. Testing is the only way to know your home has elevated radon levels. The good news is that it is simple and affordable. If high levels are found, there are effective mitigation strategies. This will ensure that radon exposure is reduced and protect the health of many. Even if your neighbor's home has low levels of radon, it does not necessarily mean your home will have the same results. The only way to know if your home has elevated levels of radon is to have it tested.
Testing your home?
If you have elevated radon levels, do not panic. We will use various radon mitigation techniques to decrease your levels and protect you and your loved ones. We have a few different options for testing. We have charcoal testing kits and/or we can have a professional install a continuous monitoring radon test. After getting homes numbers, we can install a radon mitigation system and create a safer environment for all!
